Welcome to our web site!

The purpose of this web site is to provide basic information about the Self-Medication Hypothesis -- one of the most influential theories of the causation of drug abuse and addictions.

The self-medication hypothesis proposes that addiction to alcohol and other drugs results from their use for relief from dysphoria resulting from an underlying disorder or condition -- such as stress. It was proposed in 1974 in separate publications by Edward J. Khantzian and David F. Duncan.
